DAVE HARDING MARTINI MOMENT
FIRST PRESENTED 1996
Presented after every match for a funny or embarrassing incident during the game, the outstanding one being chosen at the prizegiving/annual dinner.
The ‘Martini Moment’ came into being on the first Isle of Wight Tour in 1996. Dave Harding a teetotal, god-fearing, upstanding family man was an unlikely tourist, never having been apart from his wife and family before. On reaching Shanklin Dave could not be persuaded to join the team in a little pub sightseeing, stating that he would ring the wife, watch TV and have an early night.
The next night Dave again excused himself saying he would have an early night with a book, after phoning the family. Outside in a cab Huey, Duey and Luey sat patiently waiting for Jim who, having forgotten his camera, ran back inside the hotel. On entering the lobby Jim heard the landlord exclaim “Now those lads have gone, would you like your usual sir, Martini isn't it? Jim was amazed to see that the customer whose usual was a Martini was none other than Dave Harding. “Yes,” said Dave “and make it a large one!” Jim could barely contain himself, but saved the story until the ‘fines’ session after the next day’s game.
When Dave was exposed as being less of a teetotaller than had been supposed his face was a picture and the Martini Moment was born.
