Greenheath Cricket Club, whose name is a hybrid of Greenwich and Blackheath, was formed in 1951 from the ashes of Reverend Hawker’s Christchurch Youth Fellowship Cricket Club. Their first match took place on May 13 against Ajax CC at Charlton, Greenheath being captained by John Noble. Matches were played on Saturdays and Sundays, up to forty a season, with players very often travelling to games by public transport.
In 1953 Roy Thompson dismissed all 10 Young Conservatives at Avery Hill, in 1958 Roy Daniels became the first Greenheath batsman to pass 500 runs in a season, he also took 50 wickets, and 1961 saw a batting landmark, Peter Done scored the club’s maiden century. The 1970s brought many changes with the general introduction of league cricket, Greenheath, a wandering club, found themselves playing mainly Sundays. In 1978 wicket-keeper Bob Smith, who joined in 1965, collapsed and died whilst batting. His legacy is a trophy awarded annually to the person who has contributed most for the club. 1982 was a crisis year as many senior players retired. Founder members Reg Mexson and Roy Thompson along with some of the younger players felt the club could continue, providing new players were introduced, a recurring theme. With an influx of new members, particularly teachers, and Antipodeans, the team’s fortunes changed. Allied to success on the field the club is also strong behind the scenes, primarily due to Paul Cant, who has served Greenheath for over 25 years in a variety of administrative rolls as well as scorer, statistician and player. In 1995 the club successfully toured in Somerset, this was followed year on year by several tours to the Isle of Wight and in 2005 a tour to the Highlands of Scotland. In 2001 Greenheath celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary in style with a limited overs match and barbeque which brought together many of the past players as well as those from the present and the future. Today Greenheath is a thriving club, retaining the social and competitive ethos on which it was founded. |
